Satin crepe de chine tie neck dress and chequered over jacket by Anne Tyrrell at John Marks. Suede shoes by Mondaine.

When it comes to dressing up tonight there’s no such thing as a party line. Redheads come into their own with sleek Garboesque hairdos to set off shiny battledress tops and trousers. Jazzily printed crepe de chine dresses and jackets mix with jersey and velvet, softly innocent or dangerously backless and halternecked. Diamante remains the vital accessory – shining in the hair as well as sprinkled on bodices. The choice is yours and glamour the mood.

Add a bit of extravagance to your life with freaky shaggy jackets in flamboyant fur fabrics — everything from bold plaids and curly poodle wools to mock animal prints. Dress up everyday skirts and trousers with short boxy boleros and bottom-skimming jackets with wide 40s shoulders. Best of all, go vampy with shiny satin trousers or shorts and add a final sparkling touch of diamante.

Television is a terrific stimulus to fashion. What Cathy McGowan wears on Ready, Steady, Go! may be in your High Street dress shop a matter of days later in a mass-produced copy. And John Steed’s immaculate Avenger image has played its part in the male peacock revolution. For our television issue here is an ‘outside broadcast’ collection of action clothes.

Annacat and other listings

annacatvelvet

I have just listed a beautiful Annacat dress over at Vintage-a-Peel. It’s almost identical to one worn by Janet Lyle (co-founder of the label) in 1968 and is just about one of the most spectacular dresses of all time. Midnight blue velvet, trimmed with ostrich feathers. I ask you, what is better?

There are many other incredible new pieces up there, so please do go and check them out. Treat yourself! Get someone else to treat you! It’s Christmas, a time for treats and gorgeous frocks…
